Tempering is a gear upgrade system in Diablo 4 that helps you improve your items by adding special bonuses called tempering affixes. To get started, you’ll need Tempering Manuals, which you can find in different places as you play the game. These manuals give you recipes that are saved in your Codex of Power, so you can use them anytime you want.
Legendary items can have up to two Tempering Affixes. This lets you adjust your gear to work better with your build. However, Unique items can’t be tempered. Tempering costs in Diablo 4 vary depending on the power and rarity of the item you are upgrading. While both Rare and Legendary items can benefit from tempering, focusing on Legendary gear provides the best returns.
If you don’t like the affix you added, you can reroll it up to five times. Some items with Greater Affixes give you even more chances to reroll your tempering affixes. When your item runs out of charges, you can use a Scroll of Restoration to add four more rerolls so you can keep optimizing your gear.
Tempering is not just an upgrade option but a critical tool for making your gear strong enough to take on the hardest challenges of Diablo 4. By using Tempering Manuals, rerolls, and Scrolls of Restoration wisely, you can make your gear perfect for your playstyle and help your character be as strong as possible.
